Off-Grid Home

Lola came to us with a very clear vision and picture of what she wanted. Although she only needed a small home, she wanted it to feel spacious and peaceful.

The large kitchen/living/dining area provides this, capturing the picturesque views of Mount Macedon.

Lola wanted her home to be completely off-grid, to not be reliant on other services and to keep energy costs to a minimum in her retirement home.

We achieved this for her by including:

  • An off-grid stand-alone solar system.
  • Solar passive sustainable design principles. Such as north-facing orientation to control temperatures with seasonally appropriate sun exposure.
  • Rammed earth walls with high thermal mass properties. Paired with solar passive design the walls lower energy consumption. Their thermal properties naturally regulate temperature.
  • On-site waste management system.

Lola’s property was previously part of a nursery – with beautifully developed gardens and dams. These were important to preserve during design and construction, and since completion she has continued to add to them.

The final result is a peaceful and spacious retirement home Lola now enjoys.
